Sponsoring for education

Fr Heri, writing from Siem Reap (June 2006)

How it works...

Photo - Cambodian childrenThere are so many poor children and young people in Cambodia who do not have a chance to have a good education because of broken families, poverty, AIDS and different other reasons. we are aware that childen and youth are potential leaders in our future, that is why helping them with education is one of our priorities.

The learning centres that we run offer different kinds of education and formative programmes that help the children and young people experience a good environment during the formation years. we try to offer financial assistance for our teenagers and young adults to help them continue their study.

School assistance for teenagers

We help select poorteenagers who study in grade 9-12 (between 16-21 years) to continue their study. We limit the age range because we not only want to help them financially, but we also wish to help them to think about their lives, their future, etc.

Quote from Fr Heri 1We want to help them to be good people, to find meaning in life, to be messengers of peace and joy in the family and schools. We invite the people we help to join our activities, like leadership training, visiting the sick in hospitals on Sundays, helping us make rice soup for the ppor, join our reading community.

We help them by providing them about US$300 per year (about £180 per year, £15 per month). With this money we help them in the following ways:

  • a bicycle which costs about £20 to enable them to get to school
  • uniforms - 4 sets a year, total cost £35
  • extra classes for certain subjects like mathematics, geography, sociology (depending on the advice of teachers) - about £70 per year
  • buying books, pens, etc. - about £30 per year

In order that the money is used correctly, we give money to the students as they need it. We keep the money and our staff are responsible to administer the money and to follow up their study, and to see if they are joining our activities or not. usually we help them for one year. If they make good progress in their study and activities, we may continue.

Fr Heri and Fr PhilipWe realise that what we can do is small compared to the enourmous problems that they have. But we do what we can to bring some hope, some joy, some light to these young people. United with many other people of good hearts, we continue to help them. Will you join us?
