In early June, Ratana, Soklin and Thon, three young people from our parish link in Cambodia came to visit St Louis Global Club.
The visitors told us about the schools and the pupils where they teach. Our pupils were fascinated when they saw the photographs of their floating schools and churches. They learned about the subjects that were taught in Cambodia and saw photos of pupils celebration Mass and learning English and Maths.
We invited Ratana, Soklin and Thon to have a school lunch with us. They told us about the food they eat, particularly the rice soup that is served each day to the pupils.
Soklin and Thon told us about the many different jobs besides teaching that they each do every day, such as secretarial work, admin, cooking and teaching their pupils about personal hygiene and why it is so important.
As Global Club had raised £140 for the Cambodian schools, our pupils asked lots of questions about books the teachers would buy with the money. They were surprised that Fr Heri would convert the money into US dollars to buy books from a supplier in Singapore.
Global Club members showed our visitors the DVD "My friend needs a teacher". We explained that the aim of this campaign is to put pressure on world leaders to provide teachers for every child in the world by 2015. There are 100 million children around the world missing out on going to school because they don't have a teacher. Send my friend to school highlights the importance of education to world leaders.
In Global Club we are contributing by making paper cut-out teachers which we have sent to Tony Blair. These cut-out teachers represent the need for teachers in countries that our school has a connection with such as Cambodia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana and Sudan.
