St Edmund's Social Club

I am now coming to the end of my fifth year as Chairperson of St Edmund's Club and this has been a year of many changes. At the time of the last Parish AGM the crypt was still closed for its refurbishment work. The crypt re-opened on 28th May with a blessing and reception for all. I think you will agree it has been quite a transformation - more light, more space and an altogether more attractive venue for all.

Since the re-opening of the crypt St Edmund's Social Club has run slightly differently. The Parish is now responsible for the upkeep of the building itself, the utilities and all its bookings, this was something the Social Club did previously. The Club now pays a rent to the Parish for the use of the facilities and provides the bar for Parish functions/bookings as required. The crypt is now being used for a variety of functions - christenings, funerals, parties and also a large number of fund raisers for the Church Restoration Fund - Cake stalls, various sales, auctions and full English breakfast to name a few. Having the bar available at these additional functions helps keep the Social Club going and enables us to continue to provide a social centre within the Parish.

We have this year offered reduced priced drinks and entry to functions for our members and our regular events also continue throughout the year - quizzes, bingo and Sunday early bingo. We also have teams representing the club in darts, crib and dominoes competing in the club leagues. These things do not run themselves and we have a band of willing volunteers who organise these, for which I am most grateful.

The Social Club also continues to run Sunday Coffee Bar after 10am Mass each week. This now also runs a little differently in that we now rely on donations to cover our costs. My thanks go to our team of volunteers who help each week to enable this important part of our Parish Community to keep running.

In February we had a 70s Night featuring the famous local 70s tribute Band - 'The Glambusters'. This was a sell out evening and a great success. Following this successful evening we will be holding an 80s night on 9th June, with live music from the 80s tribute band 'The Newly New Romantics'. Make sure you get your tickets early to avoid disappointment - they are selling fast.

Proposed forthcoming events -
• We hope to have a family evening in May with a disco, similar to our popular New Year's Eve parties. Free entry, children welcome, bring along a plate of food to share. Date to be confirmed.

• We would also like to do something to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee - Possibly an afternoon garden party for all the family with a crown making competition for the children going into the evening with a disco and BBQ. Your feedback on this idea would be appreciated.

We do send regular updates of the club's events and activities to our members, if you would like to be added to our mailing list, please let us know. If you have any ideas for the Social Club, we would welcome your input.

St Edmund's Social Club is committee run and always welcomes new members. The committee meets once a month, we would welcome new members with fresh ideas, if you would like to join us, please let us know.
Thank you all for your continued support.
